The state-run Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) plans to start building four more power plants with a combined capacity of 4,600 MW through end-2010 in order to ensure power supply for the national economy in the following years. The projects comprise the Mong Duong 1, Vinh Tan 2, Duyen Hai 1 thermal power plants and the Lai Chau hydropower plant.
EVN said it has put into operation six power turbines with a combined capacity of 900 MW, kick-started the 156-MW Song Bung 4 hydropower and the 600-MW Nghi Son 1 coal-fired power plant, and plugged in 19 power transmission works with capacity ranging from 220kV to 500kV and 32 works with capacity of 110kV so far this year. The lack of investment has lagged many power projects across Vietnam behind schedule and hinders many others from being kicked off so far.

China's coal output is likely to hit 3.3 billion metric tons in 2010, said Wang Xianzheng, head of the China Coal Industry Association. The expected figure is 4.8% higher than the 3.15 billion tons predicted by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in March, indicating that China's demand for imported coal may drop in the second half of 2010.
In the first five months of 2010, China's aggregate coal output was 1.3 billion tons, up 20.6% year on year, far exceeding the 5% growth predicted by the NDRC. Meanwhile, coal imports surged over 100% to 69 million tons in the January to May period.

As per the reports from BP Plc, India has registered the highest surge in natural gas output worldwide in 2009. The surge in output was mainly backed by following the commencement of Reliance Industries' eastern offshore (Krishna-Godavari) KG-D6 field. Last year in the month of April, RIL commenced gas production from the KG basin.
RIL produces around 60 million standard cubic metres per day (mscmd) output, which led to a jump by 75% in natural gas availability in the country to 140 mscmd. In 2009, India had the highest increase in production of natural gas worldwide. Besides, it also had the highest corresponding increase in consumption in natural gas worldwide.
