Generation 'C' for Convergence

The convergence of professional audiovisual (pro-AV) products and information technology (IT) is leading to more sophisticated products and services. In fact, the extent to which both IT companies and pro-AV players embrace this convergence theme will define their future success.

In a GIA Asia Pacific survey of more than 300 pro-AV executives in the Asia Pacific, nearly one-third (29%) said they strongly believe that the key to staying competitive is to increase IT functionality or compatibility in AV products. They also strongly believe that adding AV functionality (21%) or compatibility (25%) to IT products creates a critical competitive advantage.

An example of such products is the fully computerized video-conferencing system that runs in Ethernet/IP environments, allowing streaming video transmission over high-speed broadband networks.

Japan, Asia’s most sophisticated pro-AV market, is putting greater emphasis on convergence drivers compared with Korea or Australasia. Pro-AV players in more innovative countries with less historical legacy to hold them back - such China and India - appear to be more open to convergence and recognize that the initiative needs to come from the pro-AV sector.

The gap between the once distinct spheres of pro-AV and IT is closing, it is time to look out for more new generation products which combine the best of both worlds.
